Realizing your potential instead of focusing on your limitations with Mindy Henderson

Our guest this week, Mindy Henderson shared that at the heart her story is her disability. As you listen to this episode, you will be warmly welcomed into her world. Mindy reminds us how important our mindset is and to pay attention to what is going on in our life. If one thing isn’t working, we should try something else, because by making ONE little shift, it can be what lines everything up.

Diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) when she was 15 months old, Mindy’s doctors gave her a life expectancy of just a few years. Determined and hopeful parents who worked with Mindy on physical therapy we see that today, despite life in a wheelchair all the other predictions for her have been proven untrue, Mindy is thriving.

It was Mindy’s parents who showed her the impact of hope and not giving up, and this is what set the tone for her life. She learned at a young age how to turn something negative into a positive and how to use her story to impact people.

Today, Mindy is a motivational speaker, writer, coach, host of “The Truth About Things That Suck” podcast, guest contributor of “Morning Motivations” on CBS Austin’s “We Are Austin” lifestyle morning show and was just named an “Austin Woman to Watch” in the May issue of Austin Woman Magazine’s annual “Women to Watch” issue. Additionally The Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) is launching their Quest Podcast, a powerful vehicle to present thoughtful conversation regarding issues facing members of the neuromuscular disease and other disability communities and the people who love them and it will be hosted by Mindy!

Mindy’s passion for personal development shines through. She wants people to understand that the wrong mindset is far more disabling than what any wheelchair might represent and helps people see their potential instead of their limitations. If you are in need of a pick-me-up hitting midway through the year then this is the episode for you to tune into!

Speaking of limitations, if you don’t have a disability you might take for granted when you have to get into an elevator, cross the street or travel on an airplane. You might wonder why you don’t see representation in advertising and fashion.

Shouldn’t we all be entitled to the same human experience?

Mindy is driven to build a world that welcomes and includes EVERYONE. She advocates for universal design in air travel, architecture and fashion. These are areas that desperately need change. I could talk with Mindy for hours and I am always inspired, motivated and educated by her words. I hope you will take some time and listen to the full episode below and join her movement and mission for change.
