You are powerful. How to use it to empower others with Shawntan Howell

You are beautiful, unique, smart, confident, determined and powerful. This is the mission of Girls Are Powerful founded by our guest on the podcast today Shawntan Howell.

Have you ever felt like you weren’t good enough or that your weren’t worthy?

How did that impact other aspects of your life? Your relationships?

Have you ever been told your dream has no space in being developed?

Have you ever had the cards stacked up against you?

How old were you when this happened for you?

Who was there for you to show you a mirror and let you know your greatness?

Say it with me again: You are beautiful, unique, smart, confident, determined and powerful.

What we talk about in today’s session:

  • Taking your passion and move it into action

  • Impacting the lives of those around you positively

  • Fostering and developing a strong and empowering relationship with your daughter

If you can answer any of these questions {no right or wrong way}, today’s podcast is for you. Shawntan grew up Chicago with a strong mother who showed her the possibilities of life, this didn’t mean that it was an easy trip. As she puts it, life is a rollercoaster, and isn’t that the truth. As a mother, now living in Minnesota in a predominately white community raising her daughter, Shawntan wanted her to have the same feeling of being beautiful, unique, smart, confident, determined, and powerful — So, Girls Are Powerful was born.

She did not have an easy start to the formation of her dream and her resilience kept her going through all of the “no’s” that she would hear. She was determined to have young girls feel empowered and to create a community that lead to conversations and action in supporting and creating space to take up space!

We should not have to shrink into our insecurities instead we should be able to stand tall. After my interview with Shawntan where we laughed and had fun and also got serious sharing our experiences I had an industry meeting. Throughout my career sometimes I have felt the need to mute myself or shrink to make other people feel good. Have you ever caught yourself in that situation? Today, with the meeting I “walked” into {it was on Zoom}, I took up space, shared my ideas, recognized others, and celebrated the wins I had unapologetically – I was the only woman in the room.

Shawntan and I talk about her experiences being the only. How 2020 allowed her to step further into her voice and live out her mission even deeper. When we stand confidently in who we are it doesn’t mean that we are cocky, rather it means we are unwavering. Resilience also helps us to find our footing again when the world, that doesn’t always follow the plan we have laid out, challenges us.

As we check in on one month into the new year, how are you feeling grounded?

Who is your team and squad of folks that are going to remind you of your greatness?

No matter BIG or small, how will you make a powerful impact on other’s in your life by shining the light on them and allowing them to take up the space they deserve?
